Mario Marchese was born in Genoa in 1967. He got his degree with honors from the University of Genoa in 1992 and passed the state examination for the profession of engineer in April of that year. He finished his Ph.D. in Electronic Engineering and Computer Science in the branch Telecommunications in 1996 and obtained the title of Doctor of Philosophy in July 1997. From 1999 to 2005 he worked at the National Consortium for Telecommunications (CNIT), first as a researcher (January 1999 - June 2002) and then as Head of Research (July 2002 - January 2005). From February 1st, 2005 to January, 2016, he was Associate Professor at the University of Genoa, with the Department of Computer and System Sciences (DIST) up to December 2011 (where he was deputy director in 2010-2011 and member of the Managing Board) and, from 2012, with the Department of Electrical, Electronic and Telecommunications Engineering, and Naval Architecture (DITEN). Since February 1, 2016, he has been Full Professor at DITEN, University of Genoa, Italy.

He was at the German Aerospace Center (DLR), Oberpfaffenhofen, Germany, as a Visiting Professor / Guest Scientist in the following periods: September 6 to 29, 2004; October 3 to 14, 2005; July 10 to 28, 2006; July 6 to August 8, 2007; July 7 to 22, 2008.

He is the founder and head of the Laboratory "Satellite Communications and Networking". The laboratory contains devices and instruments of great scientific and economic value and involves the management of different units of scientific-technical personnel. From  2009 to 2015 he was also co-responsible for the Laboratory of Digital Signal Processing (DSP) at DITEN-University of Genoa. He formed and trained staff in research: Ph.D. students, research fellows, research associates and young researchers. He coordinated the technical-scientific and financial management of many research projects. He attracted and managed funds both at European and institutional level. He has got 4 patents.

He has published over 290 scientific papers including 1 international book, “Quality of Service over Heterogeneous Networks ", John Wiley & Sons, Chichester, 2007, 2 edited books, 81 articles in international journals and 13 book chapters.
